
MLK Biographer, Pulitzer Prize Winner Delivers Message of Hope, Resilience in Face of Current Challenges While Speaking on Dr. King at Tompkins County Public Library
In front of a capacity crowd at Tompkins County Public Library, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Eig pointed to lessons from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as evidence that everyday citizens can make a difference.
Speaking on his biography of Dr. King that won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in the category, Eig told the crowd of key moments in King’s life from the day the then 26-year-old minister had a panic attack when he was about to speak about the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, to Dr. King’s final moments in Memphis in April 1968.

2025 Magazine Sale Begins February 1
The annual Magazine Sale begins Saturday, February 1 at Tompkins County Public Library. It will run through the end of February, or until supplies run out.
Our sale of discarded magazines is a great way you can help us reuse and recycle our older issues, while bulking up your own library on topics you enjoy. You can also use them for crafting, scrapbooking, or anything else your imagination can bring!
The magazines cost 25¢ each and will be available on the Avenue of Friends. That's the main walkway when you enter the Library.

Free Tax Preparation Service Begins February 4; Appointment Required
Registration is now open for free tax preparation services for qualified residents at Tompkins County Public Library, in partnership with Cornell University and the Human Services Coalition. To qualify, you must be a resident of Tompkins or Cortland County and have an income of $65,000 or less in tax year 2024.
In-person appointments with IRS-certified tax preparers from Tompkins Area Volunteer Income Assistance Program (VITA) will be available from February 4 through April 15 on the following days inside the TCPL Digital Lab:

Changes and Opportunities in February for Information Saves Lives Programming
Tompkins County Public Library is announcing a scheduling change for its NARCAN training sessions with the REACH project. Starting February 6, the free information and Q&A sessions will move to the first Thursday of every month at 4:00 p.m. Free NARCAN will also be given to all in attendance. You can register for the training here.
The training is part of the Library’s Information Saves Lives project, which is funded by a grant from the Tompkins County Opioid Task Force. Other programs in February include:

Winter Reading for Adults: Haiku Book Review
We can’t let the kids have all the fun! TCPL is excited to present Winter Reading for Adults!
Adults are encouraged to read any book or audiobook, then stop by the reference desk to grab a review card. Instead of a normal book review, this winter we suggest writing a “Haiku Book Review”!
What does that mean? Using your recent read as inspiration, utilize the 5-7-5 syllable haiku structure and write a short poem!
