TCPL Open House to Mark 25th Anniversary of Historic Move to East Green Street

In November Tompkins County Public Library is hosting a birthday party and open house to celebrate the silver anniversary of its move to its current home, the modern library at 101 East Green Street in Ithaca.

The celebration, which will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 8 inside the library, will include treats, all ages crafts and games, a dance party, historic displays and an opportunity to learn more about all the services TCPL offers.

There will also be a special appearance by “Ezra Cornell” to unveil two brand new library cards designed by library patrons and chosen by the community. TCPL staff will be available to sign people up for a new card on the spot or to swap an older card for one of the new designs.

Those in attendance will also have the chance to explore the library, including the Makerspace and Digital Lab, share their library memories and connect with the Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library and the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation.

The historic move to Library’s current home in November 2000 was front page news for the community, with a parade leading from the former location at 312 East Cayuga Street to what was previously the site of a Woolworth department store at 101 East Green Street. The celebration of that move, and all the work that went into it, were chronicled in the documentary “The Making of our Library”, which is available on the TCPL YouTube channel.

All 25th Anniversary Celebration programming at TCPL is made possible by funding from the Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library.
