Program Description

About this event:

This series is an introduction to different aspects of self-directed education. Considering alternative education options? Unhappy with conventional school? We’ll discuss what self-directed education is, why you’d want to do it, whether you’re ready for it as a parent, why it’s not as time-consuming for parents as you think, etc. Sessions will be informational while also leaving time for discussion and questions. Teenagers interested in exploring other options for their own learning journeys are also welcome to participate. Series will run for three sessions and will focus on a different aspect of self-directed education each week. Register to receive zoom link. Feel free to register for one or all.

Self-directed education is youth-led learning. It shifts power from the adults to young people. It shifts focus from short-term assessment performance to long-term whole-person development. Instead of telling youth what to learn and when, it provides them with a supportive environment in which they can identify and pursue their passions alongside other learners of all ages. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to learning, it validates the different interests and backgrounds that make each learner unique and special. Self-directed education is also a living laboratory for social justice and young people’s rights to self-determination.

Matt is in the process of starting Communitas (, a Self-Directed Learning center in Ithaca. It will provide families with the resources and social support they need to make self-directed education an accessible education option for all local families.
