About this event:
Developing Characters through Exercising Your Writing Muscles (Zoom info below)
When you think back on the novels and stories you love, you might remember a compelling plot, an evocative mood, or an unusual setting. But all of these components require well-developed characters to truly work magic. In this workshop, participants will explore how to create characters and then develop them through techniques that strengthen skills in description, setting the stage, believable dialogue, effective point of view, and motivation.
This workshop is for anyone who wants to deepen their writing practice through exercises designed to challenge and inspire. Sharing will also be part of the workshop, for those who are interested.
Please be aware that writing workshops are often highly personal. Guidelines on commentary and critiquing of others’ work will be shared during the first week, and all participants will be expected to adhere to them.
Funding for this event provided by the Nell B. Currie and Antoinette McNamara Fund of the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation.
About the Presenter: Susanna Drbal will be the leader of the workshop. She is a fiction writer living in Ithaca, who tends to follow her characters wherever they lead her. This has resulted in her visiting foggy lakes, well-lit supermarkets, dusty attics, and 19th century prairies. She loves to share her own work, and to encourage writers of all kinds to take the plunge and witness the effect their words can have on others.
