Program Description

About this event:

Ithaca has a long history of queer art and performance, and its drag scene has been regarded as one of the most creative and resilient scenes in upstate New York. While lacking an official "Gay Bar" in town Ithaca's drag artists have remained booked and busy by working in unconventional locations, creating unique and creative events where queer folk have been able to find a home and artists have been able to express themselves. Now seen as an incredibly inclusive and artistic scene that welcomes all sorts of performance and gender play, how did Ithaca's drag artists develop the scene, and what effects have the national in-community and out of community conversations about drag had on our local scene?

Join Tilia Cordata, PhD, for a walk through her photo albums and notes on the scene, gather around for a story time about who we are, and how we got here. Additionally hear from PhD candidate Alex Pasqualini on the influence of music, lesbian and transmasc artistry, and performance of gender in our local and national scenes.

Join us after the event  at Lot10 (106 S. Cayuga Street) for historically informed Thursgay hosted by Tilia Cordata and Just Alex to see history re-imagined and brought to life through drag performances and short talks. Thursgay Happy Hour goes from 8-10 pm with the show starting at 9:30.
