Program Description

About this event:

Winter can feel like it's unending—this year maybe more than most. When darkness is at the door, how do we find pockets of light amid the shadows? Spoiler alert: we write our hearts out. In this fun, supportive workshop, author Bree Barton will talk about her own experience with depression in sixth grade, and how writing became a form of self-care. The act of putting words on the page can be both comforting and empowering, a way to express what’s hard or painful to talk about. Together we'll create some easy, no-stress writing prompts and see what magic we can conjure. Open to anyone ages 9-13 looking for a community and supportive space to write. We'll leave the light on!

This program will be held in person in our Thaler/Howell programming room. Social distancing and masking will be practiced. Registration is required.

Bree Barton is the author of the Heart of Thorns young adult fantasy series and her middle grade debut Zia Erases the World, out from Viking in April. Her books have been published in seven countries and four languages, but she's actually a bit of a homebody, content to live in a creaky old Ithacan farmhouse with her partner and two waggish dogs.
