Program Description

About this event:

In collaboration with Cornell Celebrates Toni Morrison, the library will be hosting a virtual book discussion on 'The Bluest Eye.'

The Bluest Eye, published in 1970, is the first novel written by Toni Morrison. The novel takes place in Lorain, Ohio (Morrison's hometown), and tells the story of a young African-American girl named Pecola who grows up during the years following the Great Depression. Pecola prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be as beautiful and beloved as all the blond, blue-eyed children in America.

Toni Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford) was an American author, editor, and professor who won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature for being an author "who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality."

Cornell's College of Arts & Sciences’ Arts Unplugged series brings research and creative works into the public sphere for discussion and inspiration. These outreach events invite a broad audience to explore the work of scholars and faculty from all disciplines, all backgrounds and all time periods and to celebrate the impact that work continues to have on our daily lives.

This book discussion will be offered via Zoom. Participants registered here will receive an email with details on how to access the meeting. Limited copies of the book are available.  If you have any questions, please contact Sophia McKissick at smckissick@tcpl.org.
