The complete War of the worlds : Mars' invasion of Earth from H.G. Wells to Orson Welles
Naperville, Ill. : Sourcebooks. (c2001)
Location: Adult Non-Fiction 823.912 Complete
“Here's a nifty pairing H.G. Wells' classic 1897 SF novel, The War of the Worlds, including the original magazine illustrations, together with Howard Koch's radio play adaptation made famous by Orson Welles in his October 30, 1938, broadcast, which fooled thousands of listeners into thinking the East Coast was under Martian attack.”

Hartmann, William K.
A traveler's guide to Mars : the mysterious landscapes of the red planet
New York : Workman Pub. (c2003)
Location: Adult Non-Fiction 523.43 Hartmann
“The book is filled with pictures from virtually all of the U.S. missions to Mars, which Hartmann is uniquely qualified to interpret. He also addresses an array of fascinating side issues, such as the possibility of life on Mars and how meteorites originating on Mars have ended up on Earth. A series of sidebars called "My Martian Chronicles" details Hartmann's participation in deciphering some of the geologic secrets of our neighboring planet. The book works well as a whole and can be easily browsed with great pleasure.

New York: Random House (c2006)
Location: Adult Non-Fiction, New 576.839 Sawyer
“Sawyer captures the reader's attention from the very first page, with the Saganesque majesty of her opening imagery—the rock's ejection from Mars and its eventual surrender to Earth's gravity, the recent social evolution of Homo sapiens while the rock slowly inched back toward the surface, its final emergence "into the province of human curiosity."

New York : Hyperion (c2005 )
Location: Adult Non-Fiction 523.43 Squyres
“Squyres communicates the excitement and the anxieties involved in a project of this magnitude, steering clear of technical jargon, though more casual science buffs might want to fast-forward occasionally in early chapters packed with detail on the ins and outs of NASA's approval process for proposals and institutional politicking.”

Ward, Peter Douglas
Life as we do not know it : the NASA search for (and synthesis of) alien life
New York : Viking (c2005)
Location: Adult Non-Fiction, New 576.839 Ward
“The problem with recognizing alien life, as Ward sees it, is that science defines it too narrowly; biologists must expand their definition to encompass forms that do not resemble terrestrial carbon-and-DNA-based packages. He begins by declaring that viruses are alive and goes on to classify other exotic chemical combinations that could evolve in an alien environment. Ward says that machines like the rovers are not set up to detect "life as we do not know it" and that it will take missions with human crews to discover what we don't expect. Certainly thought--provoking.” George Eberhart.
