Teen Summer Reading 2008

Whatever the title or the subject, there is always a transformation waiting to happen when you read!

Experience the metamorphosis by participating in the Tompkins County Public Library's 2008 Teen Summer Reading Program.

Teens that read and review two books between June 30 and August 11 will be entered into a raffle to win a Summer Fun Tote Bag containing Regal Cinema movie tickets, an Itunes gift card, and a Best Buy gift card. Other prizes being raffled off include a Zen Stone Plus 2GB MP3 player, gift cards and certificates to the Bookery and Purity Ice Cream. Small prizes are available for everyone who returns a book review form to the youth services reference desk.

The Teen Summer Reading Program is free and open to teens entering grades six through 12. Review sheets can be found at the library or online at http://www.tcpl.org/teen/summer/index.html. Participants must read and review at least two books to be entered in the raffles, however, each review serves as a raffle ticket, so each additional book read increases the odds of winning.

For more information, contact the youth services department at 607- 272-4557 extension 275.

The 2008 Teen Summer Reading Program is made possible by a gift from the Finger Lakes Library System and the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation through a gift from the Cornell Pan-Hellenic Association.

Catch the Reading Bug

Children in grades K through 5 are invited to join the Tompkins County Public Library as we spread the highly-contagious reading bug with our annual Summer Reading Program.

Local children will join kids across New York State as they share the love of learning through books this summer.

To participate in the program, children should register online at http://www.tcpl.org/summer/index.html or at the Library’s Youth Services department beginning Monday, June 30th.

All registered children receive reading logs to keep track of their reading progress, and if they read six books by August 11, they will receive prizes and a certificate.

The Library is also proud to announce two, fun-filled programs in conjunction with summer reading:

History of Ithaca Movie Making

Ithaca-Made Movies President Terry Harbin will present “A History of Ithaca Moviemaking”, Saturday, June 21 at 1:00 PM and 3:00PM in the Tompkins County Public Library’s Borg Warner Community Meeting Room.

Videos featuring Pearl White and Irene Castle will be shown, as will a recreated, lost 1919 serial film entitled “The Masked Rider” which will demonstrate how Ithaca’s lost history can be filmed again.

To complete the moviemaking celebration, the State Theatre will play host to a gala presentation of the 1916 Ithaca movie “The Lottery Man” and two vintage “Krazy Kat” cartoons beginning at 8:15 PM. Dr. Philip Carli, PhD, will provide live musical accompaniment.
