Ithaca Made Movies presents: "Still Standing"

On Saturday, March 24th from 1:30 - 3:00 pm, in the Tompkins County Public Library’s
Borg Warner Community Room.

Ithaca-Made Movies president Terry Harbin will be showing a Silent Film from the old Wharton Studios entitled “The Adventures of the Jealous Wife,” from the 1916 Beatrice Fairfax serial filmed in Ithaca. This episode shows many downtown scenes of Ithaca’s buildings in the silent moviemaking days.

Following the 30 minute silent film will be a 1 hour documentary. The documentary was made for the Ithaca Centennial Celebration in 1988. The focus of the program is on the preservation movement and the efforts to save historic buildings rather than tearing them down. Hosted by Mark Adams, sponsored by the Education Committee of the Centennial Celebration and the Tompkins County Public Library, this fascinating program has not been show publicly in almost 20 years.

Interviews with Vicki Romanoff, Joe Ciaschi, the late Gretchen Sasche and Barbara Ebert (past director of Historic Ithaca) are included. Many buildings did not survive the urban renewal movement of the 1960’s. This show will feature some of the structures that were “Still Standing” in Ithaca in1988.and some of the buildings that are no longer standing.

Ithaca’s buildings were used as the backdrops for many silent films during the 1912-1920 moviemaking period. The old Wharton Studios are still standing down in Stewart Park. Efforts to keep them should be discussed before they may no longer be standing.

Don’t miss this free local history event. Co-sponsored by The Tompkins County Public Library. View the flyer at http://www.tcpl.org/programs/Ithaca_Movies_Still_Standing.pdf.
