Families Learning Science Together: Bridge Building

Families will learn about structural engineering and what engineers have to consider when designing bridges. They will see how stresses are concentrated in materials and then try to build a drinking straw bridge to certain specifications. All this takes place in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room of the Tompkins County Public Library from 1:00pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 11th. Tompkins County Public Library and the Cornell Center for Material Research are co-sponsors of this program.

Teaching Plato in the Muslim/Arab World

Western philosophy and Eastern culture come together in this presentation by Linda Finlay, as she shares her experiences and reflection of teaching philosophy to Middle Eastern students at Cornell Weill Medical College in Qatar.

Ms. Finlay. taught Philosophy at Ithaca College for 27 years before retiring to work as a multi-party mediator. She returned to teaching last January when she spent the winter semester teaching in Qatar.

In addition to sharing her teaching experiences, Ms. Finlay will discuss the exciting educational and political initiatives in Qatar and their implications for new leadership in the Middle East.

Please join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking presentation. This program is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Tompkins County Public Library, and the Multicultural Resources Center.

Families Learning Science Together: Microworld

Tompkins County Public Library and Cornell Center for Materials Research’s first Families Learning Science Together (FLST) program is MicroWorld. This will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2006 from 1pm-2pm in the Thaler- Howell program room of the Tompkins County Public Library. Families will learn how to use the optical microscope as a unique tool for scientific discovery. Participants will rotate through a number of stations investigating things on a microscopic level. The stations will include fingerprint ridges; fabrics; sands and brine shrimp. All FLST programs are free to the public, but space is limited. Teens, Get Crafty @ the Tompkins County Public Library

Area teens ages 12-17 are invited to a bead making workshop on October 18th 6:30- 8:00 p.m. in the Thaler/Howell room. Beginner beading enthusiasts will learn the basic beading steps from local bead artists as they craft their very own special piece of jewelry. This is a free program and supplies are provided, but registration is required. To register please contact the youth services department @ 272-4557 ext. 276.
