Wrap Yourself In Art – Again! An exhibit of Wearable Art

Wrap Yourself In Art – Again!
An exhibit of Wearable Art at Tompkins County Public Library
October 19 through December 30 2006

Tompkins County Public Library is pleased to announce the opening of the fourth and final art exhibit in their 2006 series Fine Arts at the Library which has been made possible in part with public funds from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County and the NY State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program. Wrap Yourself in Art – Again: an exhibit of Wearable Art opens on Thursday, October 19 with a reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Borg Warner Community Room, with a panel discussion and exhibit tour featuring many of the artists starting at 6:00 p.m.

As Oscar Wilde said "One should either be a work of art or wear one." Here at TCPL we are delighted to be able to show you works of art which can be worn, and to introduce you to the artists who make them. Come and explore the wonderful, often exotic, and always unique garments and accessories on display, and learn how you too can to create or own similar works of art.

The exhibit includes garments which use new materials featuring intricate surface designs and techniques; garments featuring recycled materials transformed from "trash to treasure"; and garments created during the EAT (explore advanced techniques) challenge. All garments and accessories are unique. Many are for sale. The exhibit continues through December 30.

To Google or Not to Google (That is the Question)

Free workshops on how to be faster and more productive when using Google will be presented at the Tompkins County Public Library on Saturday, September 23 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the library in the Borg Warner Room, East, and repeated again on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Borg Warner Room, East.

The workshop will address the following complexities of using Google:

What if you get too many hits? How do you choose the most authoritative, accurate and up-to-date site?

What if you don’t get any hits? How do you find the 300 billion “hidden” websites?

How do you distinguish between paid ads and legitimate sites?

What search engines other than Google might give you better results?

How do you access proprietary databases that aren’t available through Google such as the archives of the New York Times, or genealogy databases?

Join reference librarian Jennifer Schlossberg as she lets you peek behind her computer screen while she shows you where she looks for information to answer your questions. You will learn basic, effective searching techniques using both a search engine like Google and subscription-based databases You will determine if the site you are looking at contains good information based on a few rules. She will share the answers to the most common types of questions and teach you which of these resources to choose based on the question.

These classes are free and open to the public, but please register either online at www.tcpl.org or by phone at 607-272-4557 x254. Contact Jennifer at jschlossberg@tcpl.org or 607-272-4557 x254 if you have questions.

Teens are Reading!

Area teens were busy reading this summer and we have the proof: 373 book reviews were submitted to the Tompkins County Public Library for its first teen summer reading program. Teens were asked to read 2 books and write 2 mini book reviews for a chance to be entered into a raffle to win an MP3 Player, a gift certificate from the Bookery II, or a gift certificate from the newly established Finger Lakes Running Company. Almost 90 teens took the challenge, submitting both paper and online book reviews. The winners are:

Emma Pure - grand prize winner of the MP3 Player the library received as part of a grant from Senator George Winner
Elisha Riley – winner of a $15.00 gift certificate generously donated by the Bookery II
Ariana Shapiro – winner of a $15.00 gift certificate generously donated by the Bookery II
Zoe McAlear – winner of a $10.00 gift certificate generously donated by Finger Lakes Running Company

The summer reading book reviews are displayed in a binder in the library’s teen area for perusal; online submissions can be viewed on the teen book-blog @ www.tcpl.org/teen/imoblog/index.html.

Teens are encouraged to continue their reading and writing throughout the year; new book reviews will be entered into a raffle and starting in October, a winner will be drawn each month to receive a $15.00 gift certificate from a local bookstore. Book review slips can be found in the teen area and can be submitted online @ www.tcpl.org/teen/imo.html . For more information contact Adelle Leise @ aleise@tcpl.org or 272-4557 x 277.
