Tompkins County Reads the Great Gatsby

The faded colors of a Robert Held drawing, the swish of a slinky silk dress, the sound of one lone saxophone late at night – all of these evoke the 1920s, even today. The Tompkins County Public Library invites you to revisit that era as part of the Fifth Annual Community Read, when Cornell and the community join to inspire literally thousands of local people to read and discuss a single book. This year’s selection is The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel of greed, betrayal, and thwarted desire.

Fitzgerald was a master at evoking the sound and feel of what he was the first to call the Jazz Age, and in that spirit, the library is presenting a lively series of talks, book discussion groups, and a showing of the 1974 movie. All events are free and open to the public. Thanks to Cornell’s generosity, the library also has hundreds of copies of the book to lend.

Cornell’s Robert Frank will consider issues of wealth and social class in his talk “Luxury Then and Now” at the library. Vice-Provost Michele Moody-Adams will examine the ethical issues raised by Fitzgerald’s deeply-flawed, yet memorable, characters. And thanks to the New York Council for the Humanities, Reid Badger from New York University will serve up “The Music that Made the Twenties Roar.” The 1974 Robert Redford/Mia Farrow movie of Gatsby will be shown. Most of all, people will be discussing The Great Gatsby in open book groups at Tompkins County Public Library, the Danby Community Library, Lifelong, and The History Center, as well as at workplaces, service organizations, and private homes.

For more information, or to host a book group, please contact Shelley Garvey at 272-45557 ext. 249, sgarvey@tcpl.org, or Joyce Wheatley 272-4557 ext.257, jwheatley@tcpl.org. And please visit the library’s website for more details: www.tcpl.org/greatgatsby.
