Catch the Reading Bug

Children in grades K through 5 are invited to join the Tompkins County Public Library as we spread the highly-contagious reading bug with our annual Summer Reading Program.

Local children will join kids across New York State as they share the love of learning through books this summer.

To participate in the program, children should register online at http://www.tcpl.org/summer/index.html or at the Library’s Youth Services department beginning Monday, June 30th.

All registered children receive reading logs to keep track of their reading progress, and if they read six books by August 11, they will receive prizes and a certificate.

The Library is also proud to announce two, fun-filled programs in conjunction with summer reading:

CATCH THE READING BUG WITH MRS. MCPUPPET

Join Youth Services to kick off the 2008 Summer Reading Program with talented singer/songwriter and puppeteer Mrs. McPuppet. A world of creativity and imagination will come to life as puppets emerge from wicker baskets and whimsical songs fill the air. This performance will celebrate the season with a summer theme featuring such favorites as “The Billy Goats Gruff”, “4th of July” and “1000 Daisies”, and the most spectacular bug in Tompkins County will be flying in to kick off our Summer Reading Program. This program will take place on Monday June 30th at 6:30 pm in the Library’s Borg Warner Community Reading Room. Mrs. McPuppet’s performance is best suited for children aged 4-10, but children of all ages are welcome. Space is limited. This program has been made possible by the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation through a gift from the Ithaca Farmer’s Market.

Explore Aunt Helen’s Closet at Tompkins County Public Library

Celebrate the last days of the Summer Reading Program with Aunt Helen’s Closet. Storyteller Ellen Mnich weaves stories using artifacts and clothing from her remarkable travels around the globe. Children and their favorite grown ups are welcome. This unique program takes place on July 30th from 6:30PM to 7:30 PM in the Borg Warner Community Meeting Room. The Aunt Helen’s Closet program is made possible by the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation through its Endowed Youth Programming Fund.
