Tompkins County Public Library to Host Cornell Professor Dagmawi Woubshet for a Literary Discussion of The Pickup

The Tompkins County Public Library will host Dagmawi Woubshet, assistant professor of English at Cornell University for a free literary discussion of this year’s Community Read, The Pickup by Nadine Gordimer, Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 6:00 PM in the Borg Warner Community Meeting Room.

Woubshet teaches courses on: African-American literature and culture, the contemporary black Atlantic, the 1980s, and AIDS. His discussion will focus on Gordimer as a writer of Apartheid-related works and the significant changes that the end of Apartheid created for South Africans, as illustrated by The Pickup. He will also examine the formal dimension of the text.

The sixth-annual Community Read is being held in conjunction with the Cornell University New Student Reading Program. For a complete listing of TCPL programs related to the Community Read visit www.tcpl.org/pickup or contact Sarah Glogowski, adult services librarian at (607) 272-4557 extension 255.
