No time to read? Now you can listen to books by your favorite authors with Playaway
The Tompkins County Public Library is participating in a pilot program of the Finger Lakes Library System to offer the first self-playing digital audio book—the Playaway!
Playaways are half the size of a deck of cards and allow users to listen to books on the go with no tapes or CDs. Simply plug your own headphones into the universal headphone jack and listen. Using clearly marked buttons, Playaways give listeners the ability to move back and forth within or between chapters and to alter the speed of the narrator’s voice. An automated bookmark feature remembers where you left off, so you will never lose your place.
For a complete list of the Playaway titles available through the Finger Lakes Library System, click here and select "Playaway Titles - TCPL" from the menu on the right-hand side of the screen. Or stop by TCPL’s reference desk to request your copy today.

I got stuck on a circular pathway, in that your e-mailed announcement's link took me to your TCPL web page, and searching for "Playaway titles" only took me back to your initial announcement on that page. How can I learn available Playaway titles w/o tying up reference librarian time?
Juanita,
Thank you for pointing this out. I have revised the press release a bit to clarify. We do have a link on the right-hand side of our catalog page that says, "Playaway Titles - TCPL" which links to a list of all the titles.
Does this mean that I can check out a Playaway device from the library, or do I need to own one of my own? Can Playaway titles be played on MP3 players or I-Pods?
Thank you for your time,
-Ford
The Playaway device and the audiobook are in one small unit. When you check out a Playaway, you just plug in headphones and go. However, we will begin offering downloadable books from our website sometime in November. These can be downloaded to MP3 players.
