What are library databases?
Databases allow you to research topics such as health and business, and locate full-text articles from magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias. Most databases are available from home with a valid Tompkins County Public Library card.

Ancestry Library Edition Genealogy (ProQuest) 
This genealogy and family research database covers the U.S. and the U.K. It includes census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada. This collection has more than 4,000 databases, 1.5 billion names, and covers the years 1300 – present. It complements HeritageQuest Online to which TCPL also subscribes.

HeritageQuest Online Genealogy (ProQuest) 
This genealogy database offers materials for researching family histories and American culture. This database includes indexes of genealogy resources and original page images. It includes over 20,000 books, the entire U.S. Federal Census from 1790 - 1930, PERSI (PERiodical Source Index), Freedman’s Bank Records, Revolutionary War Pension Records, and more.

General Reference - Encyclopedias, Directories, Fast Facts
Biography Resource Center (Thomson Gale) 
This includes full-text biographical information about a vast number of people from a variety of disciplines and historical time periods. It is a creation of Gale Publishing, who publishes many of our reference books, and therefore gathers its information from these reputable sources. Among these sources are Contemporary Authors, Encyclopedia of World Biography, Newsmakers, Contemporary Theatre, Film,
and Television, Contemporary Musicians, Historic World Leaders, Notable Twentieth-Century Scientists, Contemporary Black Biography, Religious Leaders of America, International Dictionary of Art and Artists, and Writers Directory. In addition to book entries, it also has full-text articles from more than 250 periodicals, and includes images of many of the subjects. Even if you aren’t doing research for a class,
this database is just fun to browse.

This directory covers more than 11 million Canadian residents. It contains detailed information for many of the listings such as address, a map and driving directions, and median home value for the area. Search by name, address, telephone number, etc… 
City of Ithaca Municipal Code 
The Ithaca city code is on CD-ROM and can be accessed in the library. Please ask for the disc at the Reference desk. However, the code is also available online at

Encyclopedia of Animals (EBSCO)
Encyclopedia of Animals offers in-depth full-text information on a variety of topics relating to animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and dinosaurs. It includes full-text articles describing the nature and habitat of these animals. Some articles include just the abstract or citation. Some of the full-text articles include images.
Funk & Wagnalls New Word Encyclopedia (EBSCO) 
Full-text articles of over 25,000 encyclopedia entries, covering an array of topics. The database contains various images, offers brief biographies as well as information in a variety of subject areas. It is updated annually.

Full-text access to the following encyclopedias:

Virtual Reference Library (Thomson Gale)
This source contains full-text encyclopedias and specialized reference books focusing on health, business, and history. These reference materials once were accessible only in the library, but now you can access them online from the library or remotely 24/7. Some of the titles included are Business Plans Handbook, Encyclopedia of Small Business (2v), American Civil War Reference Library (5v), Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East and North Africa (4v), and History Behind the Headlines: The Origins of Conflicts Worldwide (6v), Contemporary Poetry, 7th ed., Biology: Macmillan Science Library.

Health & Wellness Resource Center with Alt Health (Thomson Gale)
HWRC provides full-text information from reference books, magazines, journals, and pamphlets for both medical care professionals and consumers. It also features a video library from Healthology, a company which provides medical video content on such topics as asthma and leukemia. The reference books included in this database are published by Gale Publishing, a company that produces many library reference books. Some of the reference titles that appear are The Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, The Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders, PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies, and PDR for Herbal Medicines.

Teen Health & Wellness (Rosen Publishing)

This fun student-friendly menu is divided by topic which allows kids to easily search for magazines, newspapers, photos, transcripts, and encyclopedias.
Primary Search Magazines (EBSCO) 
Primary Search contains full-text magazine articles from nearly 70 elementary school magazines. Some of the magazines included are Appleseeds, Boys’ Life, Cobblestone, Cricket, Highlights for Children, Hopscotch, Jack & Jill, Ladybug, Ranger Rick, Science World, Spider, SuperScience, Time for Kids, Turtle, and many more. Full text is also available for over 100 student pamphlets. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 100 magazines. The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary, 3rd Edition is included, and an Image Collection of 202,164 photos, maps and flags. Full-text backfiles go as far back as 1989, while indexing and abstract backfiles go as far back as 1984. All full text articles are assigned a reading level indicator.

TumbleBooks Ebooks for Kids (TumbleBook Library)

TumbleBooks is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which are created from existing picture books. TumbleBooks also includes a collection of full length, unabridged classics in audio format and a small collection of books in French, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. Also available are puzzles, games and quizzes. Create a list of Favorites for easy access or preload a number of TumbleBooks in an online player in order to be played one after another. The entire site can also be viewed in Spanish and French.
Requires a Flash plug-in to view and hear animation which can be downloaded for free from the TumbleBooks Help page.
TOPICsearch Current Events (EBSCO) 
This current events database allows students to explore social, political & economic issues, scientific discoveries and other popular topics discussed in today’s classrooms. TOPICsearch contains full text for over 139,800 articles from more than 4,800 diverse sources.

Fiction Connection (Bowker) 
Fiction Connection finds titles similar to books you already enjoy or searches for books by topic, genre, setting, character, location, and timeframe. You can create a personalized list of titles based on the characteristics you enjoy. 
Literature Resource Center (Thomson Gale) 
The LRC includes biographical information on writers and overviews of their works. It also includes full-text literary criticisms and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world. 
NoveList Fiction Guide
NoveList is a fiction readers' guide to finding new authors and titles. It allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a starting point to locate other authors and titles of interest. They can also enter words that describe the contents of a book they would like to read, and NoveList retrieves titles that contain these words in the book's subject headings field. In addition, users can browse over 1,200 theme-oriented book lists, 160 award lists and 1,800 fiction related web-sites.
Patron Books In Print 
Patron Books in Print has more than 5 million fiction and nonfiction titles for adults and children in book, audio, and video formats. Find what you want with a quick search or get ideas by browsing by subject, author, or award. Results include editorial reviews, cover images, publisher and bestseller information, awards won, and media mentions. Visit the Fiction Room or the Children’s Room to find favorite series, recurring characters, award winners, and listings of bestsellers by year. 
Twayne's Author Series (Thomson Gale)
Contains the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, US, or English authors, for a total of 600 individual full-text titles.

National Newspaper Index (Thomson Gale) 
This database includes citations and abstracts for The New York Times , The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post from 1977 to present. None of the article citations that you find in this database are full-text. If you find a citation to an article and your library does not own it in another form, they can interlibrary loan it from another institution.

General Science Collection (EBSCO) 
This database offers full-text coverage for more than 60 of the most popular science publications, including Archaeology, Astronomy, Discover, National Wildlife, New Scientist, Popular Science, Science News, Scientific American, and many others. Subject areas covered include the observation, description, identification, and experimental investigation of phenomena and the application of science to industrial or commercial objectives. The database also includes Great Scientific Achievements of the Twentieth Century, a multi-volume encyclopedia from Salem Press.
Science Reference Center (EBSCO) 
This research database offers full-text coverage for more than 640 science encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals, etc. Subject areas covered include biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science and society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology, and wildlife. Much of the material provided correlate to state and national curriculum standards.

Learning Express Library (LearningExpress) 
This instructional database assists patrons of all ages prepare for a variety of academic and civil service tests, including SAT, GED, ASVAB, clerical worker, police officer, firefighter, postal worker and real estate practice tests. There are math, reading, and writing skill-building resources for all students. Job seekers can receive help in creating a resume and cover letter and tips on preparing for a job.

Learn to read, write, comprehend, and speak English, Dutch, French, German, & Spanish though multimedia interactive lessons in your library, at work, or home any time of day. Requirements include: Microsoft Windows® 95/98 and up, Internet Explorer 5.0 or later version, and headphones, speakers, and microphone for the speech recognition component.
Note: You must disable any pop-up blockers. You will need to download Auralog components and Adobe Flash Player, available through the Auralog Computer Test link.
Rosetta Stone Online Language Learning Center (Fairfield Language Technologies)

The Rosetta Stone immersion language learning program was discontinued February 1, 2008.
Rosetta Stone Ltd. ceased offering public libraries remote access for patrons. We regret the loss of this very popular learning tool. We will continue to offer access in the library to Rosetta Stone English (US) levels I, II, and III on CD-ROM. Please ask for assistance at the Adult Services Reference desk.
However, the Library is pleased to offer Tell Me More, another online language learning program. We continue to offer quality language learning materials in print, on CD, and via downloadable formats.

World Music and Sounds Collection
African American Song (Alexanderstreet) 
With jazz, blues, gospel, and other forms of African American musical expression represented, African American Music brings 50,000 tracks of music to the ears of library patrons and music scholars. The collection contains recordings by the top names in the history of black American music. At least 5,000 of the tracks are rare or never-before-published. It’s the first online resource to document the history of African American music in the form of an online music listening service. Users search using a powerful interface, identify the music and performances they want to hear, and click to listen through speakers or headphones.

American Song Collection (Alexanderstreet) 
American Song is a database of 50,000 songs that users listen to over the Internet. It will allow people to hear and feel the music from our past. Much more than a repository of well known classics like Yankee Doodle and The Star Spangled Banner, this new resource includes music that relates to almost every walk of American life, every ethnic group, and every time period. You’ll find songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. There are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and anti-war protests. There are hymns, funny songs, college songs, sea shanties, shape note songs, and songs about topics as diverse as New York and electricity.

Classical Music Library (Alexanderstreet) 
Classical Music Library is an ever-growing, fully searchable classical music resource—a comprehensive database of distinguished classical recordings. It includes tens of thousands of licensed recordings that users can listen to on the Internet. Selections range from the earliest Gregorian chants to works by modern composers—including symphonic music, vocal and instrumental music, choral works, operas, the avant-garde, and other forms. Users browse, search, click, and then listen to the music over the Internet through their headphones.

The database contains 50,000 tracks that you can organize and share using personal play lists and course folders. The breadth of this collection is impressive, incorporating contemporary reggae, worldbeat, neo-traditional, world fusion, Balkanic jazz, African film, Bollywood, Arab swing and jazz, and other genres.
