ELVIS Low-VISion Workstation

ELVIS, a workstation for people with low vision, is a computer that talks, a screen that ELVIS - Low-vision Workstationyou can see, and a PC which transforms the printed word. People with little or no vision will be able to search the Internet, use Microsoft Word and search the Library catalog and online databases from the workstation.

The workstation is equipped with headphones, JAWS screen reading software, MAGIC screen magnification software, and OpenBook optical character recognition. OpenBook converts paper documents into electronic text to be read aloud by the machine to the user. The technology was made possible through the Cornell University Engineers Without Frontiers program, who researched, designed and purchased the hardware and software. Other partners with the library include:

ELVIS is equiped with three software packages:

JAWS

JAWS is computer screen reading software that reads electronic documents and Web pages. It can read aloud screen content in various languages such as American English, British English, Castilian Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, French Canadian, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Finnish.

MAGic

MAGic is screen magnification software that enlarges text and images on the computer. MAGic is for anyone who needs Word documents or Web content enlarged because they have difficulty reading standard-sized text on a computer screen. It is designed for those with visual disabilities, including seniors who need enlarged text.

OpenBook

OpenBook is scanning and screen reading software that converts printed text into electronic text that can be read aloud by the computer, and edited. OpenBook is for anyone who needs a magazine or newspaper article, book, or other hardcopy document converted into a softcopy that can be read by the computer. It is designed for those with visual disabilities that are unable to read text.
