Public Computers and Internet Access

Tompkins County Public Library is pleased to offer computers and Internet access to the public. These computers include:

  • Internet access (Browsers: Internet Explorer and Firefox)
  • Microsoft Word 2003
  • Microsoft Excel 2003
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003
  • Microsoft Access 2003
  • Microsoft Publisher 2003
  • Educational games (available on the Youth Services computers)
  • Rosetta Stone English as a Second Language software (available on select Adult Services computer)
  • ELVIS Low-vision Workstation (available on select Adult Services computer)

We also have a Teen PC area loaded with the following software for ages 14 - 17:

  • Internet Access
  • Microsoft Office
  • Career Spins
  • Microsoft® Student 2006
  • Hoyle Puzzle and Board Games
  • WinWay Resume Deluxe
  • Kaplan SAT-ACT-PSAT
  • Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
  • High School Advantage

Internet Services Available

The Tompkins County Public Library provides Internet access to patrons via two methods. Twenty-one public Internet access computers are available for patrons’ use for browsing the World Wide Web. In addition to these library-owned computers, the library makes available open floorjacks and wireless Internet access. Patrons may use their own computers to connect to this network and access the Internet.

All Internet use in the Library requires you to agree to our Internet Access Services Rules.

If you are new to the Internet, TCPL offers individualized training sessions to teach you the skills required to search for information on the Internet.

For the purposes of system security and stability the Internet services available via these networks is limited. The following table describes the permitted services as well as some which are explicitly blocked.

Public Internet Access Computers

Web browsing & most web-based applications (HTTP & HTTPS)

Blocked Services
Telnet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Peer-to-Peer (kazaa, eDonkey, Limewire, etc.)

Floorjacks & Wireless Access Network

Permitted Services
Web browsing & most web-based applications (HTTP & HTTPS), Email (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), Secure Email (POP3-SSL, IMAP-SSL), USENET (NNTP)

Blocked Services
Telnet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Peer-to-Peer (kazaa, eDonkey, Limewire, etc.), Ping (ICMP)

Access to these computers is free and open to the public. You will need to purchase a print card in order to print. Print cards cost $1.00 and come encoded with $.60. You can add funds to these cards and use them time and again. Print-outs are $.20 a page.
